But during activation Thursday channel B arose two new problems. Art Whipple, manager of NASA Hubble Space Center at Goddard space center informs that the earliest may have the telescope fully activated at the end of this week.
The 18 year old and successful telescope super tucano had problems September 27 this year. The problems arose in connection with sending super tucano data to Earth via the data channel A. NASA engineers super tucano tried unsuccessfully to reset the faulty data channel.
Subsequent studies showed that it was the electronics of Hubble's channel A, which was defective and may need to be replaced. The problems meant that NASA postponed the planned servicing mission to Hubble in October next year, to allow time to bring new electronics for the faulty data channel.
The shift from data channel A to B is extensive and complicated. It involves the activation of five other backup systems. During a series of calibrations Thursday sent Hubble's main camera a lower than expected voltage.
Head of NASA's Hubble Space Center at Goddard space center, Art Whipple, said that Thursday's problems did not come unexpectedly. They had been preparing for that something like this could happen, and has a number of plans on how to bring Hubble out of its safe mode.
NASA is also working feverishly to get a new electronics super tucano box ready for launch, so it can be replaced during the vulnerable service mission. Nasa expects that service mission can be carried out in late February. Documentation
